Vermeer M50 Trencher

I recently got a Vermeer M50 trencher with a BH-900 backhoe. I have about everything working except I am having trouble with the Funk Reversomatic 4 speed drive. The unit appears to be about a 1970 but there is hardly any information available. Vermeer supplied me with parts list and instruction manual for the M50 and a generic backhoe parts list and instruiction manual for the BH900 but I have nothing on the engine and transmission.

Sometimes I can get the machine to move in hydraulic creeper drive. Somtimes not. Sometimes I can get it to move with the mechanical drive. Sometimes not. Sometimes I can move either direction (forward, reverse) currently I can only get one direction. It moves in that direction no matter where the shift lever is placed. Even when I can get it going in either direction the trans sounds bad in reverse.

I think part of my problem is that there are so many levers on this thing that I am not positioning them correctly. Any input would be appreciated. The trans is a Funk RC-33000 series.
